Oscars to Trim Some Awards From Telecast, Add a ‘Popular Film’ Category

Oscars Oscar Academy Awards Placeholder

The Academy's board of governors has also set an earlier date for the 2020 Oscars ceremony and will shorten the telecast to three hours in an attempt to make the ceremony "more accessible for our viewers worldwide".

The next year, the Academy expanded its Best Picture category to 10 nominees to try and recognize more "populist" films like The Dark Knight.

In a letter sent to members, the Academy also announced that the telecast will now be kept to under three hours which means that some of the 24 categories will be announced during commercial breaks and then edited into the ceremony later on.

The Oscars are introducing a new awards category for outstanding achievement in popular film.

-And starting in 2020, the telecast will move up to an earlier date, most likely to the chagrin of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, shifting from February 23rd to Sunday, February 9, 2020. The 2019 ceremony will still air February 24.

The Academy Awards have suffered from low ratings in recent years. The annual awards show usually runs over three hours, with the longest show clocking in at four hours and 20 minutes minutes in 2002. After that, however, expanding the Best Picture field has largely just meant adding more indies that no one's seen to the lineup. The way they propose to do that is to present select categories live during the commercial breaks and edit them in and air them later on during the broadcast. It honors the very best of all the craftspeople involved in making a film, and to suddenly deem certain categories unworthy of being part of the actual broadcast is a slap in the face.

The 91st Academy Awards ceremony will air February 24, 2019.

Major changes are coming to the Oscars next year. Many wrote that they hoped the category will be about stunt work.

But there are still plenty of popular films that earn Oscar recognition in top categories, like "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015), "The Martian" (2015) and "Get Out" (2017). And what criteria will be used to determine whether a film qualifies as "popular?" And that's saying a lot since you awarded Best Picture to Crash.
