Some Tottenham fans on Aston Villa reportedly preparing Jack Grealish deal

Mauricio Pochettino not expecting Tottenham signings before 5pm but insists he is happy with players he has

Tottenham tried multiple times to get a late deal done for Aston Villa sensation Jack Grealish - but the Midlands club refused to sell their star man and now the club are left with the same set of players heading into the new campaign.

On how people interpreted his comments at the end of last season, Pochettino added: "I am responsible for what I told you or what I tell you but I can not be responsible for what you believe that I wanted to tell you".

"Until you finish the game you can't say it's the end". But in four hours it will be hard to sign some players. "I have no doubt we are going to be competitive, with or without signings".

But Pochettino has warned that he will demand full commitment from anyone who is still at the club after the continental window closes.

"We have a very good squad, with very good players and it is very hard to add players to that", Pochettino added.

"It's not about adding because it's fashionable to sign players".

"What the club is doing is showing that it is so fearless because building a new training ground, finishing the (player) lodge this summer is a massive investment".

"Of course we didn't sell players and with 25 players in the squad it's hard to add".

"I am the boss and if I expect you to do something then you need to provide it".

"It's true our targets are always the same level as Manchester United, Manchester City or Real Madrid but for different circumstances we can't achieve that".

"And I think that was a great job from the club to keep the best player and keep the manager".

But there have been no new arrivals in north London, something which the Spurs manager said was in part down to Brexit making players more expensive. But strong performances in Russian Federation weren't a necessity when it came to Premier League clubs deciding whether to spend the fruits of soccer's biggest television contracts.

"I am so happy with the way they came back to training on Monday". It's a massive challenge for us to try to deliver the best tools for them to get fit and then to prepare them for the whole season, not only for one, two or three games or for one month.
