Thomas doesn't break sweat in winning finale at Firestone

Tiger Woods barely keeps pace at Firestone

Justin Thomas made sure the anticipated duel with Rory McIlroy on Sunday was more like a rout.

"I'm glad I finally played well around here, just in time to leave", he said.

Kyle Stanley got within two shots of the lead until bogeys on the 13th and 14th holes. While Fleetwood fell off the pace in round three, the other two overnight leaders were each 1 under through nine holes to move to 12 under for the tournament. He finished in 10th.

That wasn't a problem for Thomas, whose six birdies included a chip-in from 30 feet behind the green on the par-3 12th. He then hit his approach over the trees and onto the green, where he two-putted for par. Greg Chalmers is third in strokes gained putting at.790 and only 20 players have an average of more than.500.

"I was just trying to be as aggressive as possible and fire at everything", Woods said. "I'm really putting well", the 42-year-old American told Golf Channel.

"I got a little choked up when I saw grandma and grandpa over there", Thomas said. Playing two groups in front of Perry, Short got within two shots with three holes to go, but Perry made a birdie putt at 16 for a three-shot cushion.

"With a three-shot lead, obviously I knew I needed to play well but you kind of have a little bit of wiggle room and you feel like you play maybe a little too conservative". He had gone five months since his last victory, a playoff win at the Honda Classic. "This is my first PGA Tour win with them here, so it's pretty cool", the 25-year-old said after joining Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson as three-times winners on the tour this year. When he saw them as he prepared to putt on the 18th, Thomas admits his emotions got the better of him.

The world's top players make the trip to the four WGC tournaments each year with a big payout on the line and a good-sized check just for showing up. I just had to put my head down. "I've never gotten like that on the golf course before". His son, Mike Thomas, also is a career club pro in Kentucky and a former PGA of America board member.

He said the victory was particularly special given his grandfather, who played in the 1960 US PGA Championship at Firestone, was in the gallery.

Johnson bogeyed the last hole for a 64 and shared third with Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark, who also had a 64.

Adam Scott's 74 left the 2011 victor at four over and tied for 57th.

Nervous at the start, Justin Thomas was in full control at the Bridgestone Invitational to the end.

Putnam earned $$612,000, a two-year tour exemption and a spot next week in the PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis.

Thomas entered the tournament looking to bounce back from a missed cut at the British Open and hoping to build some momentum building into a title defense next week at the PGA Championship. He can't say that anymore.
