Trump Mueller investigation: President could take LEGAL ACTION against any court demands

Like father like son Trump Jr. defiant about Russia probe

"This was a meeting to get information on an opponent".

CHANG: So in Trump's tweet that he blasted out this weekend, he also mentioned that he did not know about the June 2016 meeting when it happened.

Trump on Sunday pushed back against reports that he was concerned about Trump Jr.'s legal fate over the meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, and confirmed that it was held to seek damaging information on Hillary Clinton. A few days later, Trump Jr., tweeted an image from an email chain he said disclosed his interest in getting incriminating information on Clinton from the "Russian government lawyer".

Donald Trump Jr, along with his father, US President Donald Trump, and others in the administration have downplayed the importance of the meeting.

A day later, the paper reported that Trump Jr. was promised damaging information about Clinton at the meeting.

US President Donald Trump has yet again tweeted about his personal legal issues in a way he perhaps shouldn't have.

And in January, the Trump legal team revealed in a letter to the Special Counsel that it was President Trump himself who dictated the explanation about adoptions which contradicted previous Trump team statements about the President's involvement.

U.S. media then reported that the United States president had been involved in the initial statement his son issued on the meeting.

President Trump has repeatedly denied that his campaign worked with Moscow, saying "No Collusion!"

Opposition research - collecting information on an opponent - is not illegal and is a common practice in political campaigns.

But, as NPR's Brian Naylor reports, if Mueller could prove Trump was aware of the meeting in advance, "or cast doubt on denials by Trump and Trump Jr., it would be a dramatic addition to Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference in the 2016 presidential race and possible collusion by the Trump campaign".

Later Sunday, Jay Sekulow, one of the president's lawyers, defended the 2016 meeting. "Your campaign accepted. And the Russians delivered", tweeted Rep. Adam Schiff, top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

A senior Republican lawmaker on Sunday urged Trump to acknowledge to Americans that Russia's interference in USA elections is still a threat, something Moscow denies. As noted above, receiving an in-kind donation from a foreigner is against federal law.

When the meeting was first reported by the New York Times, Donald Trump Jr said in a statement that he and Ms Veselnitskaya had mostly discussed a suspended programme for Americans to adopt Russian children.

If Trump declines the interview and Mueller subpoenas Trump to testify, it would spark a constitutional fight in the courts, Sekulow said.

KEITH: Well, lots of things cause heartburn for President Trump's lawyers. So where is the truth, and why is this something President Trump would even want to focus on right now?

Sekulow said that the president had the authority under Article II of the U.S. Constitution to stop any investigation conducted by the Department of Justice.

In another, he expressed frustration with both the media and Mueller's probe.
