USA detects new activity at N.Korea factory that built ICBMs

U.S. Intel Reportedly Says North Korea is Building New Missiles As Trump Continues to Boast of Progress

The meeting comes four days after North Korea returned what were said to be dozens of remains of American soldiers missing from the 1950-53 Korean War, something that leader Kim Jong Un promised during a June summit with US President Donald Trump.

A USA airman stands guard next to caskets containing remains of US soldiers killed in the Korean War and collected in North Korea before a repatriation ceremony at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018.

At the United Nations, the United States asked a UN sanctions committee to halt all deliveries of refined oil products to North Korea after accusing Pyongyang of using illegal imports to exceed a cap on permissible deliveries. They knew their service member was lost over in North Korea and that their remains are potentially still over there.

Of the roughly 7,700 missing USA service members from the Korean War, approximately 5,300 are believed to be on North Korean soil.

The 55 cases of remains will be examined by historians and scientists at a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency laboratory on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, according to a United Nations news release. "He came back with a medal on his chest, but my dad, gone now 30 years, always told us that the real heroes of the Korean War were the ones that didn't get to come home", he reflected.

Almost 7,700 American military service-people are still unaccounted for from the Korean War, according to the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, of which approximately 5,300 are thought to be in North Korea. However, while USA intelligence agencies agree that the Kangson site is used to enrich uranium, not all European intelligence officials are so sure.

North Korea has provided very little information to help identify the remains, a defense official told VOA.

The United States said during a solemn ceremony on Wednesday the human remains presumably included Americans killed in the Korean War and thanked North Korea for making good on its pledge to hand them over.

There are no further details about the military dog-tag handed over when a USA military aircraft flew to Kalma Airport, near the North Korean city of Wonsan, on Friday.

"Whosoever emerges from these aircraft, today begins a new season of hope for the families of our missing fallen", he said.

South Korea's defence ministry said last week it plans to reduce guard posts and equipment along the heavily fortified border as an initial step to implement the agreement. Mattis praised that North Korean returned the remains but said it is not a guarantee that the bones are American.

During the Singapore meeting, Kim also committed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula while Trump promised to provide him with security assurances.

The Sanumdong factory produced two Hwasong-15 ICBMs, North Korea's furthest-reaching missile which can fly more than 13,000km, putting the the US East Coast within its reach.

Additionally, new satellite imagery from the Sohae Satellite Launching Station on North Korea's west coast suggests workers are dismantling an engine test stand, in line with a promise made to Trump.

Examination of dental charts and mitochondrial DNA will be key technologies used to identifying the remains, and the process may take years to complete, DOD officials said.

The officials who spoke to the Post said the evidence doesn't show that North Korea is growing its nuclear potential, but that it is still working on constructing modern weapons.

The source previously told CNN that if a peace treaty to replace the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War did not ensure the survival of the current North Korean regime, it could be the end of denuclearization talks.
