According to The Indian Express, earlier in June, a fellow nun from Missionaries of Jesus in Kottayam filed a complaint against the Bishop accusing him of raping her repeatedly 13 times since the year 2014.
The nun, who admitted to be under huge pressure in her battle against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, said that she was pained by the derogatory comments raised against her by sitting legislator PC George and will not meet the media.
Five nuns have been protesting outside the Kerala High Court, which is hearing the case, calling for Bishop Franco Mulakkal to be arrested and the investigation to be expedited.
On Saturday, in a protest organised by the joint Christian Council, the nuns and other protesters marched in protest to the High Court in Kochi, Kerala, holding placards and banners, UCAN news reports.
"More than 70 days have passed since the nun filed a police complaint against the bishop".
Criticising his statement, Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, said such remarks were shameful.
"I met the nun in person, who was in a deep trauma".
He added that no other nun had filed evidence against the bishop and that there was not of yet any scientific evidence to substantiate the rape charges.
In a statement, the Missionaries of Jesus congregation questioned the character of the nun and alleged she had illicit relationship with one of her relatives.
In a letter to Giambattista Diquattro, Vatican's Apostolic Nuncio (a diplomatic mission), the nun said she had turned to the church authorities for justice.
Making a fervent plea for urgent intervention, the nun in a scathing letter also sought to explain her silence before coming out against the bishop and said she had "tremendous fear and shame" and wondered why the church was "closing its eyes towards the truth".
They have alleged that top police officials were trying to sabotage the probe.
Kottayam district police chief Hari Shankar has reportedly approached the director general of police Loknath Behera requesting that the high-profile case be handed over to the crime branch, though the latter said no such decision has been taken yet. "We are ready to go to any extent for ensuring justice to our sister", a nun said addressing the protesters gathered here.
The priest also hit out at those protesting against him.
