Paris Knife Attack : 7 British tourists injured, Afghan national taken into custody

Police secure the area after seven people were wounded in a knife attack downtown Paris France Sept. 10 2018

"It was then that the man cornered the two English tourists, who were unaware that he was carrying a knife".

Seven people including two British tourists were wounded and four others critically injured in Paris after they were attacked by a man armed with a knife and an iron bar, the police said.

Four people were injured seriously in the attack.

Anne Hidalgo wrote: "I extend my full support and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured six that night in the 19th arrondissement, in an attack".

The Paris prosecutors' office is handling the investigation.

Police have so far said it was not a terrorist incident, and a man is reportedly in custody.

The attacker has been arrested by French police in the Quai de la Loire district, situated along the popular Villette Canal Basin.

The suspect, believed to be in his thirties, had been overpowered by bystanders and was unconscious when officers arrived on the scene and took him to hospital, police said.

"We said to them: 'Watch out, he has a knife.' But they didn't react".

People playing a game of pétanque nearby threw balls at the attacker to try to stop his rampage.

On Twitter, French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb praised the "courage and reactivity" of those who intervened. A witness at the scene hit the attacker with a petanque ball, police said.

France has seen smaller lone-wolf attacks in recent months.

That attack came days after an Afghan asylum seeker was arrested in the town of Perigueux for a drunken rampage with a knife in which four people were wounded, one seriously.

In June, a woman stabbed two people with a box cutter in a supermarket in Toulon.
