Bulgarian man charged with murder of Bulgarian journalist Viktoria Marinova

Bulgarian television journalist Viktoria Marinova's body was found in a park

"While the motive for this horrific crime remains unclear, we emphasize that Bulgarian authorities must consider all angles, including the possibility that Ms Marinova was killed in connection with her work", the International Press Institute's Deputy Director Scott Griffen said in a statement.

Marinova's final show was a program about Attila Biro, an investigative journalist with the Rise Project Romania and a colleague from the Bulgarian investigative site Bivol.bg, Dimitar Stoyanov.

While Ms Marinova did not appear to have been closely involved in the fraud investigation, her show touched on a sensitive subject in Bulgaria, where corruption is endemic.

Officials said on October 7 that Viktoria Marinova, whose body was found in a park in the city of Ruse a day earlier, had also been sexually assaulted, Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported.

He went on to state that the investigation was about "about rape and murder".

The killings were part of a wider trend, according to Dimitrios Papadimoulis, a left-wing Greek MEP, who said "corruption is threatening democracy" in Europe.

The Post reported on Tuesday night, citing a person familiar with the investigation, that before Khashoggi's disappearance, US intelligence intercepted communications of Saudi officials discussing a plan to capture him. Marinova had been raped, beaten and strangled, media outlet Balkan Insight reported, citing local police.

The body of 30-year-old Viktoria Marinova was found on Saturday close to a jogging path by the Danube, Ruse prosecutor Georgy Georgiev said. Urgently call for a full and thorough investigation.

Some Bulgarian media highlighted the fact that the last broadcast by Marinova involved an interview with Dimitar Stoyanov from the Bivol website and Attila Biro, a Romanian, who received prominent coverage recently when they were arrested while investigating a major company that they allege was involved in abusing European Union funds.

Yordanov said his journalists were getting threats to their safety for this reporting.

Bulgarian officials condemned the attack on Marinova, but they were also insistent that there was nothing to suggest that she had been killed because of her work. Slovakian investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his girlfriend were shot to death in February.

Reporters Without Borders, which ranked Bulgaria 111 out of 180 countries in its world press freedom index this year, called for an urgent investigation into the murder.

"I will follow closely the investigation and offer help by European Union agencies, if needed", European Union justice commissioner Vera Jourova said. "The German prosecutor has arrested the suspect, they will then assess how to proceed", Mr Tsatsarov said.

"Her death was caused by blows to the head and suffocation, and her mobile phone, vehicle keys, glasses and some of her clothing were missing", Ruse regional prosecutor Georgy Georgiev said.

"We need to find out quickly whether the murder is connected with Marinova's research into the misuse of EU funds", said Sven Giegold, a German member of the European Parliament.
