Manchester City rocked by latest allegations of financial doping

City could face UEFA and Premier League sanctions over alleged financial doping

Der Spiegel reported last week City and PSG breached FFP rules by €188 million (£164 million) and €215 million respectively in 2014, and tried to cover up the breach using vast sponsorship deals connected to their oil-rich owners that far exceeded their true market value.

Der Spiegel also reported last Friday that Man City threatened to destroy UEFA with legal action before reaching a 2014 settlement to forfeit 20 million euros ($22.8 million) in prize money. I'm sure you're not going to say I do not work on that because you say the opposite!

But the City full-back says it is up to the players to get supporters back on side first by beating Group F rivals Shakhtar Donetsk then powering their way to glory in Madrid next May. "Of course we want to follow the rules", the City boss said.

"Should Uefa fail to act, we will do what we have said before: launch a complaint with European Union competition authorities".

'If you want to buy your way into football heaven, you can't let a few rules get in the way'.

In its latest claims, Der Spiegel says City used "creative solutions" including selling players' image rights to an external company, therefore writing off that cost from their accounts.

One alleged example is the transferring of player marketing rights to another company, meaning that the cost of paying image rights was suddenly taken away from City and put onto this new company.

That is the incredibly damning assessment of Manchester City from German magazine Der Spiegel in the second instalment of the unmasking of the Premier League champions this week.

In an internal memo seen by the magazine, Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano said: "We will need to fight [FFP] and do it in a way that is not visible, or we will be pointed out as the global enemies of football". In one case, documents from City's chief financial officer, Jorge Chumillas, appear to show the Abu Dhabi United Group, Mansour's holding company which also owns City, directly paid £59.5m of Etihad's annual sponsorship, with only £8m coming from the airline. UEFA's rules are intended, among other things, to prevent exactly that.

The official response from City to Der Spiegel's request for comment remains, "The attempt to damage the Club's reputation is organised and clear".

A La Liga spokesman said: 'This confirms what we have been saying for years'.

Federation Internationale de Football Association have called for an investigation into City's financial dealings, but the club have strongly denied the accusations.

When auditors examined the arrangement on behalf of Uefa, they described it as a "very good deal for MCFC", with one analyst stating he was having difficulty understanding how Fordham expected to make a return.
