Huawei demotes two employees following News Year's Eve iPhone tweet debacle

Apple lowers Q1 expectations, blaming shortfall on weak Chinese economy and trade war

The employees' VPN of choice was causing problems on the day the tweet was supposed to go out, and they were anxious they'd miss the midnight deadline, so they used an iPhone with a roaming SIM to send the tweet.

Now, Reuters and Bloomberg are reporting that Huawei leadership was furious about the gaffe. Nikkei Asian Review reported on December 24 that dozens of Chinese companies are subsidizing their employees' purchases of Huawei smartphones, up to 20 percent of the cost of the phone in some cases.

You may remember that shortly after the turn of the year we told you about the latest company to fall foul of the course of tweeting from an iPhone instead of its own devices.

The document describes the incident in which Huawei Technologies wished its Twitter followers a happy new year from an iPhone as cause for brand damage. Although the tweet was deleted shortly after the screenshots of the blunder spread across social media, thanks to the unofficial Twitter police Marques Brownlee aka MKBHD. The memo also instructed employees to "tighten management of suppliers and partners" with an agency hired to handle the company's overseas social media apparently being primarily to blame for the humiliating snafu.

Since Twitter is blocked in China, Sapient - the social media handler-has to use a VPN to access the service. Huawei was embarrassed before when a "mobile spokesperson" blurted out a Huawei ad from their personal iPhone. This included the head of Huawei's digital marketing team, whose pay will also be frozen for 12 months according to Reuters.

The slashed revenue forecast is a rarity for Apple, with the company issuing another earnings warning only once in the last 15 years, according to CNET. He later said his actions were not hypocritical as foreign brands should not be discriminated against.

Hal Eddins, chief economist at Apple shareholder Capital Investment Counsel, said Cook's comments on how the US trade tensions with China were hurting the company's outlook "might be a dig at (US President Donald) Trump, but mostly he may be using the trade turmoil as an excuse for some missteps they've made over the past year".
