Theresa May in cross-party talks to find way forward on Brexit

Mr Dry added that Mrs May's Brexit deal was "not good for young people". But he repeated his own condition for talks: a pledge to block a no-deal Brexit.

Briefing reporters, her official spokesman - who goes unnamed according to protocol - promised the talks would be undertaken "in a constructive spirit", but he was also clear that May was not prepared to budge on any of the main issues that led lawmakers to reject her 585-page Brexit withdrawal agreement.

"The government confirmed that she would not take 'no-deal'off the table", Corbyn said in a speech in the English town of Hastings, scene of a battle in 1066 that ushered in the Norman conquest of England.

Former Tory minister Nick Boles and Labour's Stephen Kinnock, meanwhile, are spearheading a cross-party bid to get MPs to support a Norway-style soft Brexit. Britain says European Union citizens will be able to stay temporarily despite a no-deal Brexit.

Governments from the Netherlands to Romania and the Czech Republic are preparing rules for British citizens to live and work in their countries once they no longer enjoy European Union residency rights - and expecting that Britain is doing the same for their citizens.

She said the decision was down to the Prime Minister whether to have a vote but she was "shouted down and told we were not going to do it".

Doubts remained whether the Brexit Plan B Prime Minister Theresa May will present in Parliament on Monday will be different from the one that was voted down on Tuesday, but the focus has now shifted to the new deal, to be debated and put to vote on January 29.

Announcing the order in the House of Commons on Thursday, Defence Minister Mark Lancaster declared that army reservists would be ready to help minimise any disruption caused by a no-deal Brexit from February 10, 2019 to February 9, 2020.

He referred to a cross-party Bill, from Tory MP Nick Boles, which aims to force the government to extend Article 50 if a Brexit deal can not be reached, according to The Telegraph.

May said an election "would deepen division when we need unity, it would bring chaos when we need certainty, and it would bring delay when we need to move forward". If nothing happens, the United Kingdom will by default leave without a deal.

Investors appeared to shrug off both the rejection of May's deal and welcomed the survival of her government.

He concluded his letter with pitching Labour's alternative plan for Brexit, including a single market deal and a UK-EU customs union - something May has repeatedly ruled out.

Mr Corbyn said the Government must take the option of a no-deal divorce from the European Union off the table before any negotiations could begin.

"I urge colleagues to respect that condition and refrain from engagement with the government until "no deal" is taken off the table".

Company chiefs are aghast at the political crisis over Brexit and say it has already damaged Britain's reputation as Europe's pre-eminent destination for foreign investment.

"The UK's food supply generally is dependent on the free-flowing border", Bason said.
