Frank Robinson, MVP, first black manager, dies at 83

Baseball Hall of Famer Frank Robinson dies at 83

Frank Robinson, a former Baltimore Oriole and Hall of Famer, has died at the age of 83. He was a National Baseball Hall of Famer as well as earning spots in the Orioles, Reds, and Indians halls of fame. He also won the Triple Crown while leading the Orioles to their first World Series championship in 1966.

Robinson also won an MVP award with the Orioles in 1966 and remains the only player to win an MVP award in each league after also taking home the title with the Reds in 1961.

Robinson was the only player to win the MVP award in both leagues.

After managing the Cleveland Indians from 1975 to 1977, Robinson became the National League's first African-American manager in 1981 when he was hired by the San Francisco Giants. He was the manager for the Montreal Expos when the franchise relocated to Washington, D.C. and became the Nationals in 2005. The Reds, Orioles and Indians each have retired Robinson's No. 20 and saluted him with statues at their ballparks.

Robinson finished his playing career among all-time leaders in multiple offensive categories including home runs (586), RBIs (1,812), runs scored (1,829) and walks (1,420). He won the Triple Crown with the Orioles in 1966 and became the first black manager in Major League Baseball history in 1975 with the Cleveland Indians.

"Frank Robinson and I were more than baseball buddies. He was one of the greatest players in the history of our game, but that was just the beginning of a multifaceted baseball career", Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Thursday in a statement. In his first at-bat as their player-manager, he hit a home run.

He played for the Dodgers in 1972 and was traded to the California Angels after the season, played with them in 1973 and for most of the 1974 season before he was dealt to Cleveland.

After news of his passing, many athletes paid tribute to Robinson and what he meant to the game.

"I knew there was going to be an terrible lot of pressure, a lot of expectation and a lot of unhappy people because when things went right, fine, but when things went wrong, it was going to be doubly bad because of me being the first black manager", Robinson said.

During the course of his legendary career, Robinson was selected for 14 All-Star games, won two regular season MVP awards and was named the MVP of the 1966 World Series for the Baltimore Orioles.

"We are deeply saddened by this loss of our friend, colleague and legend, who worked in our game for more than 60 years". In 1975, Robinson became manager of the Cleveland Indians, breaking the color barrier.

Robinson was the only player to hit a ball completely out of old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore and once connected for grand slams in consecutive innings of a game.
