Kristaps Porzingis Had Nets, Clippers On Trade List But Not Mavericks

David Fizdale

Despite reports that Porzingis may take the qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent after next season, the truth is that Dallas knows a lot more than we do and it should be understood that Porzingis will be a Maverick for years to come.

"The Knicks, meanwhile, were told Porzingis was prepared to leave the team and continue his knee rehabilitation in Spain if he was not moved by this week's league trade deadline."

Dallas has bet big that Porzingis can return to form and be an All-NBA level big man who plays 70+ games a season.

According to Stein, his meeting with the Knicks was originally scheduled for earlier in January.

The Porzingis brothers forced New York's hand, though, by telling the team Kristaps would leave for Spain to continue his rehab if he wasn't traded by the February 7 deadline. His rehabilitation, he says, is moving swiftly, but Cuban made it clear Porzingis won't see the court in a game this spring. "I'll try to use every moment I have to bother him with some questions and some good stories that he has".

"I get excited every time I think about it", Porzingis said.

Asked if that was true, Porzingis said, "Yes". So when I hear that possibly Kristaps was not the main reason he's gone but his brother Janis' dislike of the Knicks could be the cause, I get a little upset.

"This is one of the most exciting times, I think, that I've ever been a part of, having two young players of their caliber for our fans to watch and improve game by game", Nelson said.

The Knicks made Porzingis available in the trade market in large part due to indications from his camp that he did not envision a long-term future in NY and was willing to make a major financial sacrifice this summer to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason. It's anyone's guess how the Mavericks will play, so it leaves them in limbo.

Even for Carlisle, it was hard to resist looking ahead. "In today's world of social media, things go a zillion miles an hour and we're going to blink and it's going to be media day in September 2019 and we'll be ready to go".
