Mohammed bin Salman 'said Khashoggi should get a bullet'

Saudis 'seriously undermined' Turkey's Khashoggi inquiry, says UN expert

US intelligence agencies have concluded that the killing was premeditated and nearly certainly carried out on orders from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

In the audio, the Crown Prince allegedly said he wanted Khashoggi to return to the kingdom, and complained his work was hurting the leader's image as a reformer. He has disputed the Central Intelligence Agency findings and said that he stands by the prince, noting that he "vehemently denies" any involvement.

Saudi Arabia has previously denied Turkey's extradition request for the 11 suspects.

"The State Department updates Congress regularly on the status of actions related to the killing of Jamal Khashoggi", the official added, pointing to actions the administration took to pull the visas of 21 Saudis and sanction another 17 accused of being tied to his murder.

Callamard did not name any specific Saudi state officials in her statement.

"President Trump has steadfastly insisted the US-Saudi relationship is more important than establishing accountability for murder", said Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna, reporting from Washington, DC.

The New York Times noted that the US National Security Agency (NSA) and other intelligence agencies were analyzing years of intercepted conversations of the Saudi prince in a bid to learn who was behind the murder of Khashoggi.

In October, Khashoggi was strangled and dismembered inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

According to the report on Thursday, the crown prince spoke with a top aide named Turki Aldakhil about Khashoggi in September 2017.

"Over the past four months, the Saudi authorities have been less than forthcoming in their dealings with their Turkish counterparts and the worldwide community", said Fahrettin Altun, Erdogan's communications director.

Senators had asked for the finding by Friday, with an eye to imposing new human rights sanctions on Saudi Arabia over the journalist's October 2 killing inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

After denying for several weeks that Khashoggi was killed in the consulate, Saudi Arabia indicted 11 people in the killing, including several officials close to the crown prince, and is seeking the death penalty against five of them.

According to the WSJ, the CIA's assessment was not hinged on a "smoking gun" but rather on a deep "understanding of how Saudi Arabia works", said officials familiar with the intelligence agency's conclusion.

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have not backed the evidence of US intelligence that the prince nearly certainly ordered the killing, or at least knew of it.

Turkey had made great efforts and showed major success by using both judicial and administrative capacity until the end in order to reveal the truth against the violation of a right to life and human rights, said the minister. "I believe the new Congress would follow this issue closer", Cengiz said.
