No iPad? Apple's March 25 keynote will be 'services focused'

Apple Air Pods 2 will look the same

Apple plans to hold a special event in March, which BuzzFeed News reported yesterday would unveil the company's grand plans for a news subscription service.

The report comes hours after The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple has run into resistance during negotiations with top news publishers over the terms of its subscription news service.

From a timing perspective, it seems entirely possible that Apple finally gives the world a look at its video service at its upcoming event, rumored to be happening at the end of March. As well, the report claims that publishers "likely" won't be given access to the data gathered on subscribers, which may make it more hard for them to market themselves to readers.

Smartphone makers are scrambling for ways to increase revenue now that they have realized consumers are not interested in buying new $1,000 devices every single year, or even every two years. However, news organizations are reportedly balking at Apple's proposed revenue split, which sounds downright greedy. Reuters said the plan would likely be to launch via Apple's App Store, which is available in more than 100 countries. "That's with just what YouTube monetizes and doesn't include [the ads and sponsorships] that we sell", he said.

The video service is similar to Amazon.com Inc's Prime Video and Netflix Inc products, and will include TV shows and movies either acquired or funded by Apple. Apple's App Store, where the service is likely to be distributed, is now available in more than 100 countries.

According to the report, both the New York Times and the Washington Post have rejected deals because the terms are too poor.

Apple has long hinted at a planned video service, spending $2 billion in Hollywood to produce its own content and signing major stars such as Oprah Winfrey.

BuzzFeed reported on Tuesday that Cupertino is planning to hold a services-focused event for on March 25, where the company will talk about its new services.

Apple declined comment Wednesday when contacted by Deadline.

Apple is bidding to retain around half of all revenues generated by the subscription service, which would allow subscribers to read unlimited content from publisher partners in return for a monthly fee, thought to be around $10 per month.
