Russian Federation to build mid-range nuclear missiles after INF treaty withdrawal

Top US diplomat Mike Pompeo may ne upgrading the US nuclear arsenal

Shoigu said Tuesday that such mid-range missiles must now be designed, insisting that Russian Federation take "tit-for-tat measures".

About 90 percent of China's missiles are said to have intermediate ranges as the country is not party to the INF treaty. The U.S. retains the right to revoke its notice of withdrawal from the treaty before the end of this six month period, and we would be prepared to consider doing so should Russian Federation return to full and verifiable compliance.

Shoigu said Russian Federation would work to develop a "ground-based version of the sea-launched Kalibr system with the long-range cruise missile".

"We will respond quid pro quo", Putin said.

"The American partners have declared that they suspend their participation in the deal, we suspend it as well", Putin said during a televised meeting with foreign and defense ministers.

"They have announced they will conduct research and development, and we will act accordingly".

Each accused the other of breaking the treaty, which banned ground-launched missiles with a range between 310 miles and 3,420 miles.

Latvia, like other members of the NATO alliance, has backed the United States which has charged since the administration of former president Barack Obama that Russian Federation is infringing on the INF treaty with the range of its new 9M729 missile system.

Defense experts say that because ground-based intermediate-range missiles are cheaper than sea and air-launched versions, Russian Federation could theoretically place more of them within range of European targets.

European leaders in particular are anxious about their continent becoming once again the center of heightened US-Russia tensions and the staging ground for an arms buildup between the two.

Its navy has the bulk of the arsenal - about 80 per cent - with submarine-launched missiles able to strike at a range of about 6,000 kilometres. "(Japan) will communicate with relevant countries, including Russian Federation and China, while cooperating with the United States", Suga said.

Putin emphasized that such new weapons won't be deployed unless the USA does so.

French defence chiefs plan to modernise their nuclear capacity at a cost of €5billion (£4.4bn) a year by 2020.

To this day, residents who lived in the vicinity of the Pacific tests report cancer and leukaemia diagnoses that some studies suggest was due to radioactivity exposure. The drone is created to carry a heavy nuclear weapon that could cause a devastating tsunami wave.

France is also concerned over North Korea's nuclear weapons programme and Iran's ballistic missile capabilities. Russian Federation revealed it was developing several hypersonic missile systems a year ago.

RIA cited Shoigu as ordering the military to start work on developing the two new missile systems and to ensure that work is completed by 2021.

He said: "We see the basic concepts of the security architecture that was shaped after World War II being undermined, key strategic stability agreements being dismantled". Russia, however, denies the allegation.

Putin instructed the military to make sure the research and development works on new weapons don't swell military spending.

The INF agreement was signed in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

As a ground-launched, mobile, intermediate-range cruise missile, the 9M729 system poses a direct threat to European and global security. At the time, in the late stages of the Cold War, the U.S. and its allies were mainly concerned by the perceived threat of Russian medium-range nuclear missiles that were targeted at Europe.

Technically, a USA withdrawal would take effect six months after this week's notification, leaving a small window for saving the treaty.
