Trump Sends Out Another Tweet on Border Wall

After two years of bitter partisanship and personal attacks, U.S. President Donald Trump will call for unity and cross-party co-operation in Washington during Tuesday's State of the Union address, a message likely to ring hollow with Democrats determined to block his push for a border wall. Last week, in a one-on-one meeting with the president, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, reportedly warned Mr. Trump that declaring a national emergency to build his wall would nearly certainly spark a rebellion within his party - and a vote to overrule him.

The speech comes on the heels of a record-long partial government shutdown, which ended on January 25 after spanning 35 days.

The shutdown left some Republicans frustrated over his insistence on a border wall, something they warned him the new Democratic House majority would not bend on.

According to a Gallup poll released yesterday, Americans are broadly opposed to the wall, with 60 percent against it and 40 percent in favor.

Against that backdrop, a bipartisan group of lawmakers is working to keep the government open. Sen. That has led Trump to contemplate declaring a national emergency, which he says would let him reallocate funding from elsewhere without congressional action.

"He's going to set the stage", the source said.

"It would be a bad precedent, I think, for the president to decide to invoke national security as a way to bypass a congressional logjam", said Senator Patrick J. Toomey, Republican of Pennsylvania.

With the new February 15 funding deadline looming, Trump is expected to use his address to outline his demands, which still include funding for a wall along the US-Mexico border.

At some point on Tuesday, Trump is expected to announce the date and location of his next summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

On the domestic front, Trump is expected to speak about the US's robust economy and job growth.

Trump's speech also will offer an olive branch to opponents as he looks toward the 2020 election, targeting areas he sees for potential bipartisan agreement, such as infrastructure improvements, lowering prescription drug costs and healthcare.

Trump's address will have a theme of "Choosing Greatness" and will also feature a prolonged review of the administration's foreign policy achievements and vision, spanning North Korea, Venezuela, the Islamic Republican of Iran, the fight against the Islamic State, the US presence in Syria and the future of the USA role in Afghanistan.

Melania Trump has made combating bullying one of her main priorities in the White House - the thrust of her "Be Best" initiative. Abrams lost a close, highly-contested race to Republican Brian Kemp during the November 2018 midterms.

Lewis skipped last year's speech because of Trump's reported comments about "s-thole" countries, saying he couldn't "in good conscience be in a room" with Trump because of his rhetoric at the time.

A handful of Democratic lawmakers plan to bring transgender individuals with military experience. "However, we have seen this administration use this tool in a way that was never intended".

Also on the White House's guest list is Joshua Trump, who said he had been bullied because of his last name, The Washington Post reported. Others he has invited include, Timothy Matson, a police officer who responded to the October 2018 Tree of Life Synagogue shooting, Elvin Hernandez, a special agent with the human trafficking unit of the Department of Homeland Security and family members of those killed by undocumented individuals in the US.
