US President Donald Trump says could extend China trade talks deadline

Upcoming US-China trade talk to focus on intellectual property rights

Top U.S. officials arrived in the Chinese capital on Tuesday before high-level trade talks, as the world's two largest economies attempt to hammer out the deal and avoid another escalation of tariffs after March 1.If they are coming close to a complete deal, Trump said he could see pushing off that deadline.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, a member of the U.S. trade delegation to China, leaves a hotel in Beijing, China February 13, 2019.

"We're doing very well over in China", Trump added.

Under the looming threat of a surge in tariffs once the 90-day truce expires, financial markets worldwide have lost ground in recent days as comments about the status of the talks turned more cautious. A round of talks at the end of January ended with some progress reported - but no deal and USA declarations that much more work was needed.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he's open to extending a March 1 deadline to raise tariffs on Chinese products if the two sides are near an agreement.

The dispute has escalated to encompass $360 billion in trade between the two economic superpowers, and without an agreement by the start of March, the Trump administration is poised to more than double the punitive duties on $200 billion in Chinese goods.

President Trump has also said he's unlikely to meet President Xi Jinping before the deadline, dampening hopes of a speedy resolution.

These include accusations of intellectual property theft and forcing American companies to share their technology with Chinese firms.

White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway said a meeting was still possible soon, telling Fox News Channel that Trump wants a deal with China, but it must be "fair to Americans, and American workers and American interests". "It could change via telephone".

Negotiators from the two countries are meeting this week in Beijing, with USA officials pressing China to commit to deeper reforms to a state-driven economic model that they say hurts American companies. However, strident White House China critic Peter Navarro was not listed as part of the U.S. team.
