Apple confirms March event, video streaming service launch likely

'It's show time': Apple confirms launch event on March 25

Although the iPhone maker is expected to finally debut its long-awaited Netflix rival at the event, a majority of the content available on the service at launch will be from third-party content providers - not from Apple itself.

The firm sent out invites on Monday (we're still awaiting ours, natch) summoning press to the so-called "special event" which will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater on the company's campus.

The company has placed an event invitation on its website with the tagline "It's showtime", leading many to speculate that it refers to the company's upcoming TV streamer, for which the company has ordered titles from the likes of Reese Witherspoon and Steven Spielberg. Apple often launches products and services in the weeks following an event. Apple's App Store, where the service is likely to be distributed, is now available in more than 100 countries. Sources familiar with the matter earlier told Reuters that the service could resell, among others, the Starz subscriptions of CBS Corp, Viacom Inc and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp, as well as the original content of Apple. The rumours mentioned that the company might focus on services.

Apple has long hinted at a planned video service, with Chief Executive Tim Cook speaking openly about the company's interest on earnings calls with investors but declining to give any details about what the service might look like. It also follows a New York Times report which claimed that Apple will release its string of TV titles in the spring of 2019.
