Paul Manafort to be sentenced in Va. court

Last year, a jury in US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, convicted Manafort on eight felonies related to tax and bank fraud charges for hiding foreign income from his work in Ukraine from the US Inland Revenue Service and later inflating his income on bank loan applications.

Manafort was accused of hiding tens of millions of dollars from the U.S. tax authorities which were paid as consulting fees for the work he did over the years for Russian-backed Ukrainian politicians. Judge Ellis said he believed a sentence in the guideline range of 19 to 24 years would be "excessive", according to CNN.

Judge Ellis also noted during the hearing that Manafort "is not before the court for any allegations that he, or anyone at his direction, colluded with the Russian government to influence the 2016 election".

Manafort pleaded guilty to two conspiracy charges in a separate but related case in Washington, D.C. He also admitted his guilt in the 10 counts in Virginia on which the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict.

In a filing with the judge, they said Manafort is "truly remorseful" and is in poor health after spending the past nine months in prison.

Manafort, who suffers from gout, is a first-time offender and the sentencing guidelines are "clearly disproportionate" for the crimes he committed, his attorneys said. He did not express remorse for his actions but talked about how the case has been hard for him and his family.

"The special counsel's attempt to vilify Mr. Manafort as a lifelong and irredeemable felon is beyond the pale and grossly overstates the facts before this court", Manafort's attorneys said.

"The cases that the special counsel have brought against Mr. Manafort have devastated him personally, professionally and financially", they wrote in a March 1 filing.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is asking a federal judge for compassion as he awaits sentencing on tax and bank fraud charges.

Prosecutors had argued in their sentencing memo that there was scant reason to go easy on Manafort.

The US president's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen has filed a lawsuit against the Trump's Organisation LLC in New York State Court in Manhattan stating that it failed to cover all legal expenses when Cohen was recruited by the company, court records stated.

"Paul Manafort's deceit has now extended to virtually everyone he's met, I mean his nose is longer than Pinocchio's at this point", said Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi.

The former Trump campaign official has denied intentionally lying after striking the agreement.

Previously, Ellis agreed that prosecutors had brought a fair case against Manafort, but only after he lambasted the Mueller team for targeting Manafort as a way to "get" to President Donald Trump.

Manafort was also present at a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between campaign staff and a Kremlin-linked Russian lawyer promising "dirt" on then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Ellis repeatedly interrupted prosecutors, told them to stop using the word "oligarch" to describe people associated with Manafort because it made him seem "despicable", and objected to pictures of Manafort's luxury items they planned to show jurors.
