California suspends death penalty

When Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order Wednesday putting a moratorium on the death penalty in California, he called it the culmination of a personal, 40-year journey.

The Associated Press reports that Newsom will argue today that the system is broken, and that innocent people have sometimes been wrongly convicted and put to death.

US President Donald Trump denounced the decision and said it didn't have the support of voters. "Friends and families of the always forgotten VICTIMS are not thrilled, and neither am I!" Nor should it be surprising that President Trump weighed in Wednesday morning to oppose Newsom's move.

Shawn Steele, a California representative on the Republican National Committee, said the GOP would likely use the moratorium in upcoming campaigns against Newsom and other Democrats.

Newsom signed an executive order granting reprieves to death row inmates and closing the state's execution chamber.

He says the man who murdered the detective was deserving of the death penalty and he is concerned for other victims not receiving justice.

The state now houses around a quarter of the total of condemned inmates in the USA. A judge is reviewing the latest execution protocol submitted by the state, and Newsom believed that its approval could come soon - clearing the way for executions to begin in California again. "The intentional killing of another person is wrong". Voter efforts failed in 2012 and 2016, and voters approved a measure previous year to speed up the time from conviction to execution.

"I met someone yesterday who said this is about eradicating evil, and you have a responsibility to eradicate evil by executing those on death row", he said.

Gov. Gavin Newsom Suspends Death Penalty In California

In 2016 while serving as lieutenant governor, Newsom endorsed a failed California ballot measure that would have repealed the death penalty - an issue so controversial that then-Gov.

More than 60% of prisoners awaiting execution in California are people of color.

While Newsom's gesture may impress an increasingly left-wing Democratic Party base, it is sure to be controversial on both sides of the aisle.

Newsom said that as he spoke, the execution chamber at California's San Quentin State Prison was being dismantled and stressed that his order - which stands as long as he is governor - does not mean that any inmates already on death row would be released. He's not commuting any death sentences, which in many cases would require agreement from the state Supreme Court.

In a statement announcing the executive order, due Wednesday, Newsom called the death penalty "premeditated and discriminatory".

California has not put an inmate to death since 2006, amid legal challenges to its execution protocols and discomfort among political leaders. A Pew Research Center poll completed a year ago found that a small majority of Americans support the death penalty but that those views were split by party.

In 1998, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gray Davis also ran as a supporter of capital punishment, easily crushing Republican Attorney General Dan Lungren in the general election.

"I do want to work with him on emergency preparedness and emergency planning", Newsom said.
