Eclectic musical virtuoso Andre Previn dies at 89

Andre Previn, the pianist, composer and conductor whose broad reach took in the worlds of Hollywood, jazz and classical music, has died at the age of 89.

The family fled Nazi Germany in 1939, moving to Los Angeles, where Previn's great-uncle was the music director for Universal Studios. After orchestrating the score of My Fair Lady for the big screen, he partnered with Allan Jay Lerner in to write musical Coco, a 1969 musical about fashion designer Coco Chanel starring Katharine Hepburn.

He was also steadily active in classical music, becoming chief conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra in 1967 and principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1968 before tenures at the Pittsburgh Symphony, London's Royal Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Set to a libretto by Philip Littell, the opera premiered at the San Francisco Opera in 1998 with star Renée Fleming as Blanche DuBois and Previn conducting.

In 2010, he was presented with a lifetime achievement award by the Recording Academy.

"So very saddened by the loss of the great Andre Previn", tweeted Fleming.

The 12-minute tour-de-force of comedy, which was filmed at a time he was the acclaimed conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and had recently settled in Surrey with his third wife Mia Farrow, is memorably amusing.

Previn appreciated and played the jazz he first encountered in his teens throughout his life: "I'm naturally curious about a lot of different disciplines in music and I enjoy doing them", he said.

After the splashy nature of their affair, Farrow and Previn's marriage was a fruitful one.

Farrow and Previn married in 1970, after she had given birth to twins and just weeks after his divorce came through.

He also adopted three more children with Farrow, including a daughter Soon-Yi, who married film director Woody Allen in 1997. They tied the knot in 2002 and split in 2006.

"I will never forget hearing the 1970s recording of Previn conducting the LSO in Rachmaninov's Second Symphony when I was about 15".

"The @NYTimes says his music knew no boundaries, but I would say that of his talent and humanity as well".
