European Union warns Brexit extension can not be taken for granted

Countdown to Brexit 15 days until Britain leaves the EU

But today the Speaker of the House John Bercow has selected four other key amendments to be voted on - which could change the course of Brexit or move towards cancelling it altogether. "Today is about the question of whether Article 50 should be extended". Mr Corbyn said he would first examine Labour's proposals for a softer Brexit which include a permanent customs union and a second EU referendum.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is expected next week to try and persuade parliament to back her Brexit deal at the third time of asking, before heading to Brussels to request a short delay to the exit process.

Britain's parliament on Thursday voted to ask the European Union to delay Brexit until at least June and head off a chaotic end to their 46-year partnership in two weeks. That vote could come next week.

May's authority hit an all-time low this week after a series of humiliating parliamentary defeats and rebellions. The argument now is really about what that new deal would look like, and with the extension of Article 50, they have a little more breathing space to process it.

May is planning to hold another "meaningful vote" on her withdrawal deal by March 20.

"Now that we have averted disaster in the short term, colleagues across the House must work together in the coming days secure the winning majority needed to deliver the only credible solution to this mess - giving the people the final say".

The DUP's Westminster leader, Nigel Dodds, has stated that May's government has failed to implement what was agreed and included in paragraph 50 of the joint report in December 2017, which stated the assembly would be able to veto any new regulatory difference.

"I will appeal to the EU27 (remaining members) to be open to a long extension if the United Kingdom finds it necessary to rethink its Brexit strategy and build consensus around it", he said.

Pro-Brexit lawmakers in May's Conservative Party have rejected her withdrawal deal - which lays out the terms of Britain's departure and the outline of the country's future relations with the European Union - because they think it keeps Britain too closely bound to the bloc's rules and regulations.

"Although a no-deal exit was voted down, we can not predict what will happen because it depends on how negotiations with the European Union will go, We will have to watch developments closely", Aso said.

She told BBC Radio 4's Political Thinking With Nick Robinson podcast: "The element now is that people will have to take a bad deal rather than no deal".

May also needs to win over the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which has so far refused to back her plan.

DUP leader Arlene Foster signalled yesterday she may be willing to agree to a deal as business leaders piled pressure on her to avoid a no-deal scenario.

The Prime Minister apparently breaking her word by attempting to Article 50 - she will require the EU's agreement to do so - will leave many wondering whether they can trust her other promises; for example her vow to stand aside as party leader before the next general election, made in exchange for Tory MPs not backing her ouster in a recent vote of no confidence.

Documents circulating among EU ambassadors make clear the bloc would terminate the UK's membership on July 1 if it has not taken part in European Parliament elections. It lost some of those gains on Thursday.

If it is rejected she says Britain will need a longer extension, which could see Brexit postponed indefinitely. The amendment was passed by parliament.
