Facebook’s outage becomes Telegram’s gain with 3 million new users

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp suffered a global outage. What happened?

Reflecting that shift, the chief executive said that although Facebook meant to keep Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp as separate apps it would work to provide interoperability for their messaging capabilities, and extend that interoperability to SMS messages.

DownDetector website - one of the internet's most used sources of numbers on outages - showed the number of complaints had peaked at more than 12,000, gradually falling to about 180 as of 11 a.m. ET on Thursday.

"Yesterday, we made a server configuration change that triggered a cascading series of issues. We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible", a Facebook statement said on Twitter.

While the outage continued, the New York Times reported that U.S. prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the social network's practice of sharing users' data with companies without letting its members know. Regions affected include the NY area, parts of California and the Seattle region, according to Downdetector. In a lengthy post, Zuckerberg said he increasingly expected people to shift away from "open platform" services towards more intimate private messaging apps.

Facebook reportedly generates an average of $189 million in revenue per day, which is obviously huge, but for context, The Social Network is also on track to bring in $69 billion in total revenue for the year.

"Yesterday [Wednesday], a server configuration issue made it hard for people to access our apps and services".

A US Justice Department investigation into the company's data-sharing practices broadened to include a grand jury, a person with knowledge of the matter said Wednesday.

Now the question turns to whether Facebook should reimburse businesses for ads not delivered, or delivered on a semi-functional platform - as reported by Reuters, Facebook is considering whether to refund advertisers for lost exposure due to the problems, though that seems an unlikely outcome.

While Facebook has restored majority of services, there are users around the world that are still experiencing problems.
