Ferry sinks in Iraq`s Tigris River, 93 people feared dead

Tigris river

A ferry carrying over 200 people capsized in the Tigris river in Iraq's city of Mosul on Thursday.

The ferry was transporting people to a tourist island to celebrate Nowruz, which marks the Kurdish New Year and the arrival of spring, AP reported.

Video footage showed scores of people being carried away in the water's fast current as passengers on a nearby boat shout.

Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has ordered an investigation "to determine responsibilities".

The ferry was said to be heading towards a tourist island as part of new year celebrations. He said the stricken ferry was overloaded with around 150 people when it capsized.

Mosul was devastated by the war against the Islamic State group, which occupied the city for three years.

He said the ferry had been loaded to several times its capacity.

Pope Francis has expressed his grief for the loss of life caused by the sinking of a ferry in the Tigris River near the Iraqi city of Mosul.

Most of the casualties on the ferry were women and children who could not swim, said the head of Mosul's Civil Defence Authority, Husam Khalil.

The victims included many women and children. Reuters said, citing police and medical sources, that at least 40 people died in the accident.

They were taking the ferry boat across the river to reach a popular picnic area.

The interior ministry, issuing a fresh toll, said 94 people had died and 55 were rescued, after its spokesman Saad Maan said at least 19 children were among the dead.

"All we wanted was to celebrate the New Year and it turned into a catastrophe", a man passing the scene protested.
