Google unveils the Android Q beta

Google Releases Android Q Beta for Developers, Early Adopters

Google has finally released the beta version of its next iteration of its mobile operating system, Android Q. The first beta comes with a preview SDK for developers with system images for all generations of Google's flagship phones, Pixel, and the official Android Emulator.

These were a few features of the Android Q as its just the first Beta.

Numerous top-line improvements Google plans to add in Android Q will probably not be apparent just by looking at a freshly flashed Pixel.

Android adapts Q to folding devices.

Bonito and Sargo are the codenames for the upcoming Pixel 3 Lite phones created to get Pixel phones into the mid-range market - a more affordable Pixel. Before then several beta versions of the software will appear. That means it's likely to be unstable in places and it's not recommended that you use it on your main phone unless you're happy to put up with possible issues. You can do this if you don't have a Pixel device.

If you are on Android Q, you can find out how to enable the new desktop mode here. A good backup will include relevant information and data, among which we can count apps, SMS messages, call history and media content like photos and videos.

It's important to note that if you've used the Android Beta Program before and enrolled your device for the Android Oreo or Pie program, you will need to re-enroll your phone. We expect that will be some time this summer for Android Q.

Google often announces new Android features at Google I/O or it's October device events.

Credit: GoogleFoldable phones are tipped to be the next big thing in smartphones, and Google's making sure that Android Q is ready for it. Functions for pausing and resuming apps have been updated to allow for the multiple different processes that could run simultaneously on a foldable phone, and apps can now be more easily resized for changing between screens. Google has added additional controls for granting location access to apps. This change makes it easier to maintain the privacy of users' files and helps reduce the number of permissions that your app needs.

Any app that received the permission to access the user's contacts will only get non-ranked contacts going forward.

If history repeats itself, most of the consumer-facing features coming in Android Q should be unveiled at the Google I/O conference in May. Google is renowned for always improving its apps and operating system through a constant stream of updates that introduce software tweaks and bug fixes. Google has also rebuilt the WiFi stack in Android Q to enhance user privacy and performance. It will let users decide whether they want to give location access to an app and there will be three options- when the app is in use, all the time (in the background) or deny. Dynamic Depth will be an open format, so it might take off. Android Q will support multi-resume and notify apps when they are in focus.
