New York attorney-general investigates Trump projects

The president may now be trying to get out ahead of any more bad news barrelling down the pike by trying to demonize NY state - but he's also signaling that he's afraid of what's coming.

The inquiry by James' office is a civil investigation, not a criminal one, although its focus and scope were unclear.

A person familiar with the matter says Monday's subpoenas seek loan applications, mortgages and other records.

Michael Cohen told Congress that Donald Trump inflated his assets to improve his odds of buying the National Football League's Buffalo Bills, a gambit that eventually failed. The deal fell through when the team was sold to a rival bidder for $1.4 billion.

Among the banks receiving subpoenas is Deutsche Bank, which has been among the very few willing to do business with Donald Trump. The unit lent Trump more than $100 million in 2012 to pay for the Doral golf resort and $170 million in 2015 to transform the Old Post Office Building in Washington into a luxury hotel.

The Times' source said the subpoenas were inspired by Cohen's testimony about how Trump reported his finances. Messages left with New Jersey-based Investors Bank and the Trump Organization were not immediately returned.

James had vowed to investigate Trump in connection to the probe by the special counsel, Robert Mueller III, into potential Russian interference in the 2016 election, the paper writes.

James, a Democrat newly elected to office, pledged to look into Trump's business practices, saying after her victory last November that she'd be "shining a bright light into every dark corner of his real estate dealings and every dealing". He's used similar language to criticize the various ongoing investigations into his rise from businessman to president. The office of the NY attorney general declined to comment on the reports. The previous acting attorney general already humiliated the president by filing a lawsuit against and dissolving the Trump Foundation. Trump has referred to him as "sleazebag AG Eric Schneiderman" and "Shady Eric".

It also adds to Trump's own legal pressure.

Deutsche Bank was Trump's go-to lender for decades, even as other commercial banks stopped doing business with him because of multiple bankruptcies.
