North Korean State Media Admits to Summit Failure

Trump ‘disappointed’ by North Korean missile activity reports following breakdown of nuclear talks

The Sohae facility was partly dismantled following President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's first summit in June a year ago, according NPR.

An analysis by two experts at CSIS said the rebuilding of the launch facility amounted to a "snapback" from the moderate dismantlement North Korea performed after Trump's first summit with Kim in Singapore previous year.

"The public at home and overseas that had hoped for success and good results from the second DPRK-US summit in Hanoi are feeling regretful, blaming the US for the summit that ended without an agreement", KCNA reported, citing a commentary in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper.

There were also reports that North Korea was restoring part of the Dongchang-ri missile launch site that it had started dismantling previous year.

Trump has favored direct talks with Kim, but the next stage of negotiations is likely to be conducted at lower levels.

But it was still the right decision, and it didn't necessarily mean the engagement is over or that the USA and North Korea won't reach an agreement in the future.

North Korea's state media had initially responded to the failure of the Hanoi summit with a relatively upbeat stance, presenting the talks as having made progress, and predicting more to come in future negotiations.

For Town, this represents an "opportunity" for the North Koreans, who "are very aware that this is an unconventional president", seeing as "they didn't have a good track record with the conventional presidents".

Earlier this week North Korea sparked outrage after satellite images revealed the nation was "rapidly rebuilding" its Sohae Launch Facility, a long-range missile launch site.

The Ministry of Unification handles relations with North Korea.

The US State Department has declined to comment on the development.

US National Security Adviser John Bolton and other USA officials have sought to play down the developments spotted at Sohae, although Trump on March 7 called recent North Korean activity "disappointing".

Analysts say that Kim Jong Un had a lot invested in the summits, and didn't want to be seen as failing in the immediate wake of the summit.

She said the images are more likely connected to a satellite launch than any military missile activity.

"Amid recent satellite images hinting of activity at North Korea's missile launch facility, ".

The U.S. will pressure North Korea to give access to the site in an effort to assess whether the site is operational. "That means taking out all key parts of their nuclear fuel cycle, removing all their fissile material, removing their nuclear warheads, removing or destroying all their intercontinental ballistic missiles, and permanently freezing any other weapons of mass destruction programs", he said.

It also showed a stone-faced Bolton during a meeting in Hanoi, while Trump and other USA participants were all smiles.

"I think the military exercises are important because, again, really all Kim Jong Un is like an organized crime leader who runs an organized crime family, and he calls it North Korea", King said.
