President Trump says Democratic Party is now 'anti-Israel' and 'anti-Jewish'

US House Democrats Struggling over Rebuke to Lawmaker for Israel Comments

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) continued to sound off on Thursday's anti-hate resolution passed in the House of Representatives by pointing out the "double standard" that exists for Democrats and Republicans.

"I thought yesterday's vote by the House was disgrace", Trump said, "because the Democrats have become an anti-Israel party, they've become an anti-Jewish party, and I thought that vote was a disgrace and so did everybody else if you get an honest answer".

The resolution also "acknowledges the unsafe consequences of perpetuating anti-Semitic stereotypes" and "rejects anti-Semitism as hateful expressions of intolerance that are contradictory to the values that define the people of the United States".

But after blowback from progressives, it was revised to broadly condemn discrimination against Muslims and other minorities as well.

"The Democrats have become an anti-Israel party, they've become an anti-Jewish party, and that's too bad", he insisted.

The issue has caused a deep rift. Republicans who voted against it complained it had been watered down.

Among those is a policy about Israel.

The action had come after controversial comments by Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. As I have often written before, what you say in such sensitive matters can matter less than what people hear.

She continued: "Our nation is having a hard conversation and we believe this is great progress".

The Jewish Democratic Council of America slammed the president.

"Mr. President, you have redefined chutzpah", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who like Trump is from NY.

Democrats wrestled for days about whether or how to punish Omar, a freshman from Minnesota who has been dogged by accusations of anti-Semitism since she accused "evil" of Israel of "hypnotiz [ing] the world" in 2012.

The debate comes amid a rise in anti-Semitic incidents across the United States. The Anti-Defamation League said it was "pleased the House of Representatives took a firm stance against anti-Semitism, including making an explicit statement rejecting the pernicious myth of dual loyalty and other vile slurs that have been used to persecute Jews for centuries".

"But that's okay", he went on.

But it's not hard to make legitimate criticism of Israeli politics sound like an attack against Israel and Jews in general, whether you want to or not. In 2016 he tweeted a doctored image of Hillary Clinton showing her against a backdrop of cash alongside a Star of David with the label "corrupt".

Other prominent Jewish groups, however, welcomed the resolution.

Sen. Brian Schatz, a Democrat from Hawaii, also reacted Friday to an official White House Twitter account's tweet featuring video of Trump's statement about the Democratic Party.
