Tiger declawed, cards 7 at TPC's island green

Tiger Woods holds up his golf ball after putting out on the 14th hole during the second round of The Players Championship golf tournament Friday

Woods' caddie Joe LaCava said he'd already forgotten about the quadruple bogey as he walked back to the clubhouse following a almost five-hour round.

Tiger Woods reacts after a quadruple bogey on the 17th hole during the second round of The Players Championship.

The 4-over-par 7 matched Woods' highest score ever on a par 3.

The two-time Players Championship victor got close, bouncing back with a pair of birdies and no bogeys on his back nine to shoot 1-under 71 in Round 2.

"Everyone who makes the cut, anyone who makes the cut, has a chance to win this golf tournament", said Woods, who was tied for 39th.

Tiger Woods hits from the seventh tee during a practice round at The Players Championship golf tournament, Wednesday, March 13, 2019, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

However, his tee shot on the 146-yard par-3 17th trickled off the back of the green into the water. He missed only two greens in regulation, but that includes his big miss on No. 17.

Woods recovered in the back nine, ending the round with a three-under par 71. "I had him take a look at it to see what he thought of where my set-up looked like now versus all the times that I have putted well". He said the others in his group got a read off from his shot.

"It's just so much slower, it's not as warm", said Woods when asked did he feel he has an advantage over golfers who've never played at TPC in March. Pepperell will play in his first Masters next month and is yet to visit Augusta National, but said on Wednesday that he's had a vision or two about golf's hallowed grounds. Hitting his third from the drop area, he went in the water again.

Woods hit 9-of-14 fairways Friday morning, using driver 10 times and fairway woods four times.

By Sunday, we will find out if Woods can better Sutton's feat.

Woods' first two shots on the hole ended up in the water and the resulting calamity left the 80-time victor on Tour humanised - if not humiliated - in front of a packed gallery and a somewhat-shocked live online and TV audience. Ended up getting back to 3 (under). "And I was bound and determined to get it all back and get it back to 5, and I thought that would have been a hell of a fight".

"I really haven't done a whole lot wrong", he said, except for the one hole.

"I could be very easily up near that lead, there's no way I would be leading, but I would be close enough to that lead, given the weekend and the forecast".

He's also not feeling any stiffness in his neck, which caused him to withdraw from last week's Arnold Palmer Invitational.

He had no excuses for what happened at 17. "With it being soft and no roll, and I think it's going to play into the wind on the weekend, it'll be a challenge, it will be tough". He had carded a double-bogey four times, including in the final round in 2018.

Going first turned out to be a bad thing, as Woods said he might have misjudged what he needed to do.
