Tiger Woods withdraws from Arnold Palmer Invitational after suffering neck strain

Tiger Woods is withdrawing from the Arnold Palmer Invitational due to a neck injury, delivering a big blow to the Orlando tournament that surged in popularity when he played a year ago.

In a tweet, Woods announced the strain is improving but won't be fully healed in time for the event at the Bay Hill Golf Course, which has a purse of $9.1 million.

"Unfortunately due to a neck strain that I've had for a few weeks, I'm forced to withdraw from the API", Woods wrote.

"I saw him in Mexico getting treatment before and after he played; he did have some tape on his upper back".

The 14-time major champion says his previously troublesome lower back is unaffected and he has no long-term concerns. "Its connection to Arnold makes it one of my favorite tournaments and I'm disappointed to miss it". Instead of rest, and in a somewhat surprising decision, Woods travelled directly to Mexico to play in the WGC Mexico Championship.

Woods' eight victories at the PGA Tour event at Bay Hille is a record, shared with Sam Snead, for most wins at a single event.

Woods, 43, has had a long history of injuries, most recently coming back from a spinal fusion in his lower back. He finished tied for 10th at 8-under par.
