Trump says time to back Israeli sovereignty over Golan heights

"President Trump´s decision to recognise the Golan as part of Israel is strategically wise and overall awesome".

It said United States with its "stupidity and arrogance" had no right to decide the fate of the area and any move to recognise Israeli sovereignty over it was "an illegal action with no impact".

In a meeting with parliament speaker Nabih Berri, who is himself a Shiite, Pompeo warned of the "destabilizing activities" in the region of Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group that is targeted by U.S. sanctions but holds three Cabinet posts in Lebanon.

"The jungle is back", former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt tweeted in response to Trump's statement on Golan.

Netanyahu has been pushing the USA and the global community for official recognition of the Golan Heights as part of the State of Israel.

With Israeli elections just weeks away, recognizing the Golan Heights will likely boost Netanyahu's re-election bid.

In an interview Thursday night on Fox News, President Trump denied that the timing of his move was meant to help Netanyahu in the elections.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a speech at a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation: "We can not allow the legitimisation of the occupation of the Golan Heights".

The Kremlin has joined other leading nations including France and Germany in criticising the decision, with Moscow insisting the move would "destabilise" relationships in the Middle East. Pompeo will also meet Friday with the foreign minister.

"Iran will closely follow all further changes and adopt a corresponding political line in consultations with the Syrian government and other states", he said.

Earlier this month, Israel revealed that Hezbollah terrorists were establishing a network on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.

"The Golan is a territory occupied by Israel since 1967".

Pompeo says it's "possible" Trump was sent to save the Jewish people from Iran

"We don't want our ties with America to be affected and we want to work together to solve problems, including the issue with Hezbollah", he said, stressing that Lebanon's stability is of mutual interest to both states.

Trump's comments recognising Israel's annexation are "completely outside global law", Arab League secretary general Ahmed Aboul Gheit said on Thursday evening.

But they did not appear to quell behind-the-scenes security contacts developed in recent years between Israel and U.S. Gulf allies, with Washington's urging, over their common enemy Iran, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova gives a briefing on January 31, 2019.

Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and effectively annexed it in 1981, ignoring a strong protest by the United Nations, which still sees it as an occupied land.

"Russia, as you know, advocates the principled position on the Golan Heights belonging to Syria".

France's foreign ministry said the annexation of the Golan Heights and its recognition by the United States is contrary to worldwide law.

"Changing the status of the Golan Heights bypassing the UN Security Council is a direct violation of UN decisions", she said.

And here comes an American president and says: 'no matter what the worldwide law says, no matter what the world says.

U.N. Security Council resolution 497, issued after the annexation, refers to Israel's action as "null and void and without worldwide legal effect".

Aoun's office said the president told Pompeo that the country's priority is to preserve national unity and peace adding that "Hezbollah is a Lebanese party that has a popular base representing one of the main (religious) sects in the country".
