Boeing CEO apologizes for 737 Max crashes

"We at Boeing are sorry for the lives lost in the recent 737 MAX accidents", Muilenburg wrote.

Boeing Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg issued a statement Thursday from the Renton 737 factory expressing "the enormous gravity of these events across our company", and acknowledging the role the new Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS, played in the crash.

A statement by Boeing Commercial Airplanes' President and CEO, Kevin McAllister, on Thursday, said that understanding the circumstances that contributed to the accident was critical to ensuring safe flight. It also noted that the accident is still being investigated.

"Although there was three heavy automatic and un-commanded nose dives from the flight control system, in today's category and today's terminology it looks like the MCAS was activated", Gebremariam said.

Boeing is working to develop a software fix that will get the 371 grounded 737 Max jets back in the air.

Boeing said it would study the report.

He acknowledged that the MCAS could cause pilots to lose control of an aircraft in response to erroneous data from the plane's external sensors.

Boeing CEO Muilenburg said while the Ethiopian and Lion Air "tragedies continue to weigh heavily on our hearts and minds", Boeing remains "confident in the fundamental safety of the 737 MAX". But this has failed to satisfy many relatives who questioned why Boeing did not act earlier to take the planes out of service. This activated a new anti-stall safety system on the Boeing 737 Max 8 that controls trim, known as MCAS, which is believed to have pushed the nose of the aircraft down. Aviation authorities should verify that the issues have been adequately addressed "before the release of the aircraft to operations", she said. The complaint named Boeing and Rosemount Aerospace, the manufacturer of the angle of attack sensor, as defendants.

Boeing had issued guidelines to pilots on how to disable an automated anti-stall system after a deadly crash in Indonesia in October, that were followed by an emergency airworthiness directive by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

A Boeing 737 MAX airplane is pictured on the tarmac with its signature winglet and fuel efficient engines outside the company's factory on 11 March 2019 in Renton, Washington.

Mr Muilenburg, in his statement, noted that full details of what happened in the two accidents will be issued by the government authorities in the final reports very soon. The plane made four nose dives before it crashed into the Java Sea.

Even though pilots took at least some of the steps recommended by Boeing and the FAA to counteract MCAS, they were confused and ultimately lost control, according to the report. The agency was also reluctant to ground the planes after the Ethiopian Airlines crash and was among the last agencies to do so.

"With an MCAS failure such as they suffered, the nose pitching down radically multiple times would create literally the most hard situation I would imagine in an aircraft", pilot Anthony Roman told CBS correspondent Kris Van Cleave.

Ministry of Transport spokesman Musie Yehyies said there were no plans to publish the report on Wednesday.
