Democrats vote to subpoena Mueller report over Republican objections

Mueller report: House Judiciary Committee meeting to authorize subpoenas for full Mueller report today

House Democrats took their first official step towards forcing Attorney General William Barr to release Special Counsel Robert Mueller's full report into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, after Barr failed to comply with their April 2 deadline to do so.

The Justice Department defended its handling of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation report after media reports that Mueller's team wrote summaries that they meant to be made public.

Mueller's team wrote the summaries "in a way that minimum redactions, if any, would have been necessary", assuming that they would be made public and there was "immediate displeasure" when they read how Barr characterized their work, a U.S. official told the Post. In his letter to Congress, Barr said he and his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, had determined there was insufficient evidence to establish the president committed that offense.

The Washington Post: Members of Mueller's team reportedly told people close to them that they were concerned with Barr's letter because "the evidence they gathered on obstruction was alarming and significant".

And as Democrats have demanded the full Mueller report from Barr, Nadler and Schiff, the House Intelligence chairman, have increasingly become targets of Trump's attacks on Twitter and in public.

"But if that doesn't work out in a very short order, we will issue the subpoenas".

Some of Mueller's investigators told associates their report was more damaging to President Donald Trump than the attorney general has described, and New York Timesreporter Michael Schmidt told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" what he learned about that disconnect.

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson (L) and Attorney General William Barr attend a First Step Act celebration in the East Room of the White House April 01, 2019 in Washington, DC. A spokesman for the special counsel did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nadler, whose committee would preside over any impeachment proceedings against the president, said the committee has the right to see the entire 400-page report and all supporting evidence.

On Thursday, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said those alleged summaries could contain important information for the public.

"The way that the Trump Administration tried to spin the end of the Mueller investigation was a sign of its unscrupulousness and ineptitude", Boot declares.

The rallies were thinly attended, with about 250 people outside the White House and about 300 in New York's Times Square waving signs, singing and demanding the report, which is almost 400 pages long excluding appendices.

The Times' lede paragraph was demolished by Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel, who pointed out that the story was based on the words of anonymous "government officials" and "others" who were "familiar" with what the Mueller "investigators" told their "associates".

The committee rejected a GOP amendment that would have 24-17 blocked the subpoenas from applying to grand jury information.

Nadler said the subpoenas were being issued because the five former White House officials may have received documents in preparations for their interviews with the special counsel that Democrats believe are not protected by executive privilege.

Both the Times and the Post reported that the Mueller team had prepared their own summaries of the report.
