PSN Name Change is Available Now on PS4

Sony finally allows PSN Online ID changes

Luckily, even if you do decide to alter your ID, you can always revert back to your old name, by contacting PlayStation Support (there is now no automated way to do this, but at least it's free).

If you are a PlayStation 4 user and wish to change your PSN Online ID, you will be able to do just that today in North America.

You can opt to display your old PSN name next to your new online ID for up to 30 days (to help people find and recognise you). The first ID change is free, and after that, they will cost $4.99 for PlayStation Plus members and $9.99 for non-PlayStation Plus members.

You'll be able to change your online ID as many times as you like.

All games originally published on or after April 1, 2018, support the online ID name change, along with the vast majority of actively played PS4 games. After that, simply follow the on-screen prompts to complete the change. The games on this list may reset your game progress, including any record of in-game currency you may have purchased with real money.

Some common issues include the disappearance of your new name or the previous PSN ID still being visible. "It is possible to incur permanent game errors or data loss as a result of using the feature". This has been announced on the official PlayStation blog, which also states that PS Plus users will get 50% service discount. Some of the problems, like a game unlinking your PSN account from a publisher ID, or resetting customised settings like audio levels and controller mapping, can be reset. Currently, there are only 10 games on the list with known critical issues. So while games published for the first time after April 1, 2018, should all work, not every single one has been tested.

The PSN name change can only be done via a PS4 or web browser - it can't be done through a PS3 or PS Vita system.

Q: What kind of issues could I potentially run into?

Parts of your game and applications may not function properly both online and offline. But there are many other popular titles that will have issues.
