Stephen Miller, hard-line anti-immigrant provocateur, has Trump's ear

So wrote Esquire columnist Charles P. Pierce on Monday following the ouster of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen-and as signs that senior White House adviser and xenophobe Stephen Miller is exerting more control over immigration policy.

She later served as John F. Kelly's chief of staff at Homeland Security before becoming Deputy Homeland Security Secretary in December 2017.

Nielsen resigned Sunday amid Trump's growing frustration and bitterness over a spike in Central American migrants crossing the border.

The potential reinstatement one of the most divisive practices by Trump was just one aspect of the upheaval evident at the Department of Homeland Security this week following the resignation of Kirstjen Nielsen. Both Nielsen and Alles were closely associated with former White House chief of staff John Kelly, who resigned a year ago after falling out of favor with Trump. White House senior policy adviser and immigration hard-liner Stephen Miller is blamed for the shakeup at the department.

Some speculated that Nielsen would be a strong candidate for consulting jobs with companies that get government contracts, particularly as long as Trump is in office, when her knowledge and insight will be marketable.

That's despite the uphill battle Kobach would certainly face getting confirmed by the Senate. Grassley (R-Iowa) said he was "very, very concerned" regarding reports that Cissna could be next in a series of rapid-fire DHS dismissals that began late last week when the White House suddenly pulled the nomination of Ronald Vitiello, who had been tapped as director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A senior Trump administration official said the president's national security adviser, John Bolton, after a blowup with Nielsen late previous year, also recommended to Trump that she should go.

The decision to replace Ms. Nielsen comes as little surprise.

"We're not looking to do that", Trump told reporters before meeting with Egypt's president at the White House. "There's no place for them to go that won't continue to break the law", said Lee Gelernt, the American Civil Liberties Union official whose lawsuit on behalf of a separated mother led to the reunifications.

That compares with seven such departures in the first three years of the Obama administration and four for President George W. Bush.

Just today, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration's policy that sought to force asylum seekers to wait in Mexico.

Omar claimed without evidence that Nielsen was responsible for "locking toddlers in cages", the death of a migrant child, and "repeatedly lying" about the migrant crisis involving children.

"I think it would be hard for him to demonstrate he's accomplished anything for the president", Grassley said. After at least 2,700 migrant children were taken from their parents and detained.

Last Friday, the President visited Calexico, California, where he said, "We're full, our system's full, our country's full - can't come in!"

Asked by host Tucker Carlson what he would do first if he were put in charge, he said he would deploy thousands of FEMA trailers to border cities or military bases in Texas and Arizona and set up "processing centers" to handle asylum claims, and prevent those living in the USA illegally from sending remittances home to Mexico, among other ideas.

Donald Trump, Jr. also chimed in writing, "I see that the head of the Farrakhan Fan Club, @IlhanMN, took a short break from spewing her usual anti-semitic bigotry today to accuse a Jewish man of being a "white nationalist" because she apparently has no shame".
